reigate caves reigate in surrey is well known for its 'caves' which riddle the town centre. come and explore a hidden gem this summer. home barons' cave tunnel road caves private tours books contact home barons' tunnel private books us important information – visiting reigate caves on may 13th, the caves were open for the first of our open days on 2017. we have run open days for many years and many visitors have enjoyed coming to see the caves. on may 13th, far more visitors than normal arrived in reigate to see the caves – probably more than double the number we have ever had come before. this resulted in long queues, and disappointed visitors who had to be turned away, as well as wider disruption in the town with full car parks. we are a voluntary body that tries to keep our activities as informal as possible. as a voluntary body, there are only so many helpers we can use to make the day run smoothly. the huge numbers we saw were completely unexpected and could not have been foreseen, based on previous open days. we were therefore unprepared for what happened. we are planning to change the way we look after visitors, and believe we can reduce the long queueing that was so frustrating in may. however, we cannot promise a place on a tour once all the tickets are allocated, and neither can we promise that there will not be some queueing required before you enter the caves. please bear this in mind before you set out to visit us on the remaining open days of 2017, especially if you are travelling a significant distance. thank you for your understanding of the issues we are trying to resolve. -- history the surrey town of reigate is well known for its 'caves' which riddle the town centre, although these are in fact largely old sand mines. the castle mound overlooking reigate town centre is composed of soft sandstone and has been mined over several centuries. the castle has long gone but the mound and many of its excavations still remain. known locally as the "reigate caves", tours include the barons' cave in the castle grounds and the east and west caverns in tunnel road. your view of reigate will change once you have experienced what lies beneath your feet! ease of access due to the nature of the caves, they are not well suited to everyone: the barons' cave has a steep flight of steps at its entrance, as well as steps throughout. as a scheduled ancient monument, the site cannot be modified for easier access. tunnel road east & west also contain stairs, ramps and soft sand floors. however, if you have mobility issues, it is possible to visit much of the east caves by an alternative entrance. open days 2018 the caves will be open on: sat 14th july 10am-4pm sat 11th august 10am-4pm sat 8th september 10am-4pm no booking necessary – just turn up tours run every 20 minutes according to demand and availability of guides. to visit all the caves at a leisurely pace will take about 3 hours. prices barons' cave tunnel rd (e & w) under 5's free free child £ 1.50 £ 2.00 adult (from 16) £ 2.00 £ 3.00 over 60 £ 1.50 £ 2.00 family £ 6.00 £ 9.00 disabled £ 2.00 * £ 3.00 ** * unfortunately the barons' cave is really not suitable for those with significant mobility difficulties. ** includes up to two carers at no additional charge. wealden cave and mine society ©2017
